How Much Insulation Do I Need?Installing insulation in a home is one of the most important purchases a homeowner can invest in that continues to provide benefits for many years, often for the life of the home. It is no secret that energy prices are rising, but so does the return on investment when installing spray foam insulation.
Most building codes require a minimum of R-38 insulation in attic spaces, but some US states in colder climates like Appleton may require as much as R-60. R-13 is typically required in walls, but colder regions may require R-19. Crawl spaces are infamous for causing air leaks into the interior, so many municipalities require an R value of at least R-11 between the floor joists or trusses. If the design of the home allows it, adequate insulation can reduce energy costs dramatically, as well as conserve energy. |
What is Spray Foam Insulation?Spray foam insulation uses advanced technology to create an insulation that serves several functions, like self-adhesion and moisture resistance. To illustrate, a typical residential exterior wall is only 3 ½” deep and typically insulated to R-13, often using fiberglass batts that should not be compacted. To achieve a higher R value, such as occurs with spray foam insulation, the wall studs would have to be enlarged to 2” x 6” lumber. This modern insulation design provides higher R-value, even at smaller volumes, making spray insulation a solution that can be used virtually anywhere.
Some Appleton Spray Foam Insulation clients want more than just home insulation. Fortunately, spray insulation is one of the best sound proof insulation materials as well, because it provides a dense, uneven surface that sound struggles to pass through. Our spray insulation process allows the foam to absorb and dampen unwanted noises that can pass through under insulated walls. Homeowners close to traffic and other outdoor noises benefit exponentially from spray insulation because of the tiny air pockets within the foam. These air pockets resist thermal transfer of heat, while capturing or reflecting much of the outdoor noise. Because we use only the best materials and technicians at Appleton Spray Foam Insulation, we make promises we can keep. Spray insulation is one of the most popular insulation methods currently used in modern construction to conserve energy and resist moisture. Spray insulation not only insulates, it encapsulates the space and provides a vapor barrier, crack sealing, and sound deadening after it has cured. At Appleton Spray Foam Insulation, our technicians use a special machine called a hopper, similar to a paint sprayer. The technician sprays a very sticky liquid foam into the target area and as the foam dries and cures, it expands to fill in voids that might create unwanted drafts or allow moisture to pass. Spray insulation is very fast and effective, but in most cases is not considered a do-it-yourself project. Spray insulation foam can be dangerous to handle without proper training. |
Why Would I Want Spray Foam Insulation? At Appleton Spray Foam Insulation, we do insulation better. Spray insulation has become the de facto insulation solution in modern construction due to its speed of installation, performance, and cost-effectiveness. Older forms of insulation like fiberglass and cellulose use decades old technology. In contrast, spray foam is technologically advanced to address the shortcomings of these other materials. For example, blown fiberglass or cellulose is simply blown into an attic and piled up to a predetermined thickness wherever it lands. Although these methods do offer insulation R-value, they do very little to seal up cracks and gaps that may be literally sucking the heat from your home.
Spray foam insulation forms a great moisture barrier after it cures. Many home repairs are the result of water damage from a leaky roof or unsealed wood. Spray foam insulation does a much better job of repelling moisture than batts, cellulose, or fiberglass. Spray insulation provides a huge benefit to homeowners, because when spray foam insulation is installed, mold and mildew struggle to grow. |
How is Spray Foam Insulation Better?
Most of us think of long pink batts and foam from a red can with a yellow lid when we envision how insulation is installed. Together these products do a good job of resisting thermal transfer and sealing up gaps. However, both products have downsides, like compaction over time and over expansion of the open cell foam. These issues can be expensive and time consuming to correct, but spray foam insulation addresses many of them.
Technological Advances
The spray foam used at Appleton Spray Foam Insulation is not the same product as the expanding foam available from a can. Do-it-yourself products are a different type of insulation called open cell foam. Open cell foam expands more than closed cell foam due to its design purpose and chemical composition. Care must be taken when using this product however, as open cell foam can expand against doors and windows and essentially prevent them from opening.
Obviously, this is a problem in the event of an emergency. The open cell structure of the foam also reduces the effectiveness of the material to repel water, so this form of foam lacks vapor retardation properties. This is why the Appleton spray insulation solution is far superior. Our closed cell foam expands just enough to seal, without causing sticky doors and windows.

Appleton Spray Foam Insulation addresses these concerns with scientific advancements in technology. For example, as mentioned earlier, insulation works by trapping air in tiny pockets within the insulation material, be it fiberglass, cellulose, or spray foam. All products have mass, so over time gravity will compact the fibers inside the batts, expelling the trapped air. By allowing the air to escape, these batts become denser and less effective. Spray insulation, however, will retain its shape for decades, keeping these air pockets trapped.
Spray Foam Insulation Offers More R-Value Than Fiberglass, Cellulose or Batts
Spray foam is not only faster to install than either batts or blown in fiberglass, but also offers more R-value by volume. As a comparison, a standard batt designed for 2” x 4” walls will usually have an R-value of about 13. These batts are designed to fit into 3 ½” thick space, meaning they are compressed as soon as they are installed. Professional batt installers often fluff the batts in an attempt to decompress them, but gravity will take over eventually and allow the batts to hold less air.
Spray foam, however, can offer an R-value as much as 6.5 per inch, allowing the material to nearly double the R-value of batts in the same space. Also, since spray foam is applied by a hopper, there are no time-consuming staplers, hammers, or tape fasteners required. This means fewer cords and hoses to trip over, while providing superior adhesion. This method also prevents eventual settling, which is common with fiberglass batts, because it holds its original shape and does not noticeably compact. Because spray insulation expands slightly as it cures, it also fills air gaps and cracks between the lumber that might allow insects and debris to enter the home.
Attic Insulation Is CriticalAt Appleton Spray Foam Insulation, we understand the importance of attic insulation in Appleton, Wisconsin. We have very cold winters here in Appleton, so with energy prices on the rise, effectively insulating your home’s attic will directly result in energy cost savings. The technicians at Appleton Spray Foam Insulation do more than just blow a few inches of fiberglass or cellulose into your attic and hope for the best. We inspect your attic, identify problem areas and develop a plan. As experts in the field of insulation, we understand that gaps and cracks in an attic can add up to drafts that can enter the home, resulting in unnecessary work for the HVAC system. At Appleton Spray Foam Insulation, we use only the highest quality closed cell spray foam material to not only seal these cracks permanently, but provide the most cost-effective insulation solution available as well.

Wall InsulationThere may be no better use of spray insulation than within stud walls. At Appleton Spray Foam Insulation, we use only the latest in spray foam equipment to install the spray insulation into the wall cavity, ensuring a tight bond with the wall. Our spray foam insulation also forms a vapor barrier against the wall, preventing moisture from entering the structure through the insulation. Standard batts also provide a vapor barrier, but they will degrade over time and must be mechanically attached to the wall. The spray insulation we use will work to provide a firm, effective vapor and air barrier for years to come.

Commercial Insulation Services
At Appleton Spray Foam Insulation, commercial insulation services are a big part of our business, but we're still growing. We know the complexities building owners and commercial property managers face in an uncertain economy can be stressful. As such, we make deadlines, material selection, cleanliness, and perhaps most importantly, scheduling are our top priorities. Return on Investment
Businesses must provide a safe environment for their customers to shop in without losing money. Today’s business climate is tough, and every dollar saved increases the chances of success. Energy prices continue to rise, forcing building owners and commercial property managers and owners to find the balance between a good return on investment and maintaining profitability. The Appleton Spray Foam Insulation solution is designed to be cost-effective, long lasting, and easy to maintain. Commercial buildings are getting older and many contain old insulation that has lost much of its effectiveness. These older structures tend to be drafty, large buildings with high ceilings, making them very difficult to keep comfortable. Unfortunately, the solution is often to adjust the thermostat and consume even more energy. Obviously, this is not sustainable going forward. Using a wasteful strategy is expensive and is unlikely to improve in the future without a plan to conserve energy and strengthen the thermal envelope. Appleton Spray Foam Insulation has the experience, training, and get-it-done attitude to strengthen the thermal envelope of commercial spaces. Our spray insulation saves the client money, makes the structures easier to condition, and continues to provide excellent service for years. We can also safely remove old, contaminated insulation and replace it with the latest in spray insulation that outperforms and outlasts other insulation materials. |
